It has been estimated that at the end of May this year, approximately one in twenty five tenants (133, 000) in England and Wales had rent arrears. SL Property Services, which is behind the Your Move estate agency brand, calculated that at this time total rent arrears were £254 million.
Approximately 557,170 tenants had overdue rent payments, and one in seven had not paid their rent for the two months. This amounted to 11.6% of rents payable to private landlords in England and Wales.
Large as these fugures are, they show an improvement from the £278 million outstanding rent arrears in November 2008, which represented 13.5% of all rents due.
