A report in a Hampshire police journal told of how two police officers thought that they had found buried treasure. The police officers believed that cash encased in a steel box lay buried below ground. The officers found that the metal detector they were using to locate the cash beeped furiously over the spot on the lawn upon which they were standing. Excitedly they began excavating with their spades but to no avail, the hole revealed nothing. The officers tried an area a few metres from the original spot and again the detector went wild, again they dug, again they found nothing. Having uncovered almost the entire lawn, a third officer called to the scene was able to put an end to their puzzlement - the device was detecting the steel caps of their boots !
