Hiya at the moment iam fighting with my landlord over compensation we feel we are due, due to 10 days witout hot water or gas central heating during january of this year on a new system that had been installed only back in the summer.at the time the landlord agreed to giving us some compentaion for the inconvenience and asked us to put our claim in writing. we did and now he is saying that we need to provide evidence. firstly are we entitled to claim? and what evidence is he asking us to provide?
thankyou Janet

How and when did you notify the landlord of the problem?

If he was told immediately either directly or through the agent that is the proof.

If he was not told he would be looking for evidence from witnesses I expect.

It would be diplomatic if the LL did give some compensation.

Its arguable if you are entitled or not.

how far you wish to argue is another matter, you need to plan what you will do if you dont get it, what is your relationship like with the owner generally, would you take them to court, do you wish to renew, etc.

I would guess it will be unlikely you will get much as Winter months are exceptionally hard to get service engineers.
It might be worth you signing up with British Gas on a private basis as Landlords cannot use this service as the house is rented and deduct the charge off the rent either yearly or monthly so you are more guaranteed a quick service.
If you had rung for an engineer yourself you will find it can take up to 2 weeks to get anyone to come out.
The Landlord does have an obligation to provide you with an alternative heat source if no other heating is available within the property.
Best of luck.
