1  General Category / Disrepair / tenancy issues & the Electrics on: January 30, 2007, 02:38:07 PM
I have found poorly wired sockets (spur attached to spur etc) in a house I am waiting to move into, presumably attached by the previous tenant.  These have been removed by an electrician that was repairing the bathroom but they made it clear they are employed for the bathroom only.  In total 9 sockets have been removed.  I have confidence in the work done by the electrician and the electrics now look to be as they were when installed.  However, I have no way to check this and have no idea what other bits of DIY electrics might be lurking.  Should I demand an electrics certificate?  I understand in normal circumstances the landlord doesn't have to give me one, but is this still the case if I have reason to believe that unsafe work has in the past been carried out?  Moreover, could I be liable if I have concerns over the wiring and don't demand it be checked?  If the landlord does agree to have a cirtificate provided, should I move-in in the meantime?  Am I risking my insurance or accepting a degree of liability if I do?
I hope you can help,
Tom
