Question Title: Stolen keys

Question:
384
One of my tenants has contacted me to tell me that she has been burgled, or rather that someone entered her house whilst she was upstairs, the front door was not locked, and has taken some of her property. The burglar also took the keys to the property and the tenant now wants me to replace the locks. Whilst I can understand why this should be done I do not see why I should pay for it. What is the position in this situation?
Answer:
The landlord is under no obligation to pay for the costs of replacing keys which were stolen from the tenant at no fault of the landlord. Many good insurance policies for tenants include coverage for replacing locks where the keys have been lost or stolen.
