Question Title: Death of a tenant - no will or relatives

Question:
360
The tenant of one of the houses that I manage has just died in hospital. She didn't have any relatives and there isn't a will. It was a fixed term tenancy which will terminate at the end of the month. The bulk of the rent was paid by housing benefit. I have contacted the local authority and they told me that a housing benefit payment has been sent out but not cashed. What can I do? Who should I contact?
Answer:
The tenancy will continue to exist until the end of the fixed term. It will vest in the person of the Public Trustee (address - 81 Chancery Lane, London WC2A 1DD, telephone - 020 7911 7105) He will act as the personal representative of your deceased tenant and will therefore be responsible for the rent until the end of the term and also for any personal or other belongings of the tenant remaining in the property. His office should be contacted as soon as possible.
