Question Title: Furniture Safety Regulations
| Question: 282 |
| How should we actually test the furniture for compliance under the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations ?
|
| Answer: |
| The regulations are not particularly helpful on how one should check whether a particular item of furniture is compliant. There are several obvious ways such as looking for a statutory labels that are generally attached to post-regulation furniture. Alternatively, one can check the date on the receipt to check that it was purchased after the introduction of the regulations for retail supply (sold after March 1st 1990). If there is any doubt as to whether the items comply, then the advice given out by the DTI is that the items will need to be replaced. The regulations do refer to two ignitability tests but these tests are more applicable to manufacturers carrying out material testing and destructive testing. Again, DTI literature refers to various approved testing agencies that suppliers can employ. Unfortunately, these testing agencies are generally appointed by manufacturers in the final testing stage of new products; such services would not be economical for the landlord or letting agent to use.
