| What is meant by the term 'House in Multiple Occupation'?

| This is a difficult question to answer simply. There are different definitions for different purposes. However the principle definition of HMO for health & safety purposes was provided by s.345 Housing Act 1985 and stated that it "means a house which is occupied by persons who do not form a single household. This has now been replaced by a more comprehensive definition in section 254 Housing Act 2004. For more details see Letting Factsheet 40
