Question Title: Eligibility and general rules of housing benefit

Question:
136
One of my tenants has been receiving housing benefit since he lost his job as a restaurant chef three months ago. Over a month ago, he started a new job working in a local pub yet I know that he is still claiming his housing benefit. Is he entitled to be claiming housing benefit now that he is working ?
Answer:
Housing benefit (HB) is only available to those who meet strict eligibility requirements. The main ones are: - they are liable to pay rent on a home - they are on low income (normally because they are unemployed) - their savings and other assets are not worth more than £16,000 If the tenant or their partner: been getting Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA), Income Support or both, for at least 26 weeks? stopped getting income-based JSA or Income Support because you have started work, increased the number of hours you work, or your wages have increased? started full-time work you expect to last for 5 weeks or more? they may get Extended Payments for housing benefit without having to put in a claim.
