Barnes v Gorsuch (1982)

An attempt was made to argue that a Victorian house which was in 1959 divided into three flats and subsequently sub-divided into six flats was a ‘purpose built block of flats.

HELD: The court did not agree that this was 'purpose-built’, as the ordinary meaning of ‘as constructed’ means 'the building as it was originally designed and built’.
